East Kaitanimbar Offshore

The Tanimbar trough, that is part of the Timor trough, i.e., the continuation of the Sunda trench that marks the boundary between the descending Australian and overriding Timor plate. Notice the Timor trench is separated from the Sunda Trench by a sag near Sumba Island , the Scott plateau and the North Australian basin. On the other end, it becomes becomes the Tanimbar Trough, southeast of the Tanimbar Islands, continuing on to the Aru Trough east of the Kai islands near the Bird's Head Peninsula on New Guinea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timor_Trough). The shortening on the overriding plate is represented by the folded belt in the accretionary wedge. In the descending plate, normal faults lengthened the Australian Atlantic-type divergent margin, mainly during the Lower Cretaceous. (see also Page 3A)
