Potential Source-Rocks

Rift-type Basins

In Australia deep offshore and, particularly, in the Browse geographic basin, from where the seismic lines of this composite Canvas autotrace are located, the potential generating petroleum sub-system is, often associated associated with organic rich sediments of the Late Jurassic rift-type basins. These sedimentary basins, which predate the breakup of the Gondwana lithosphere, are, clearly, visible in the very deep part of this autotrace (the eastern rift-type basin in this tentative interpretation is  little bit speculative). However, as illustrate on this tentative geological interpretation, in certain areas, the burial of the potential source rocks is, largely, insufficient for the organic matter of potential lacustrine source-rocks reach maturation (water depth has no role in  the maturation of the organic matter). This is even more true for the potential marine source-rocks deposited in the Atlantic-Type divergent margin. Notice the possible presence of the lava flows above the breakup unconformity The clastic sector of the Atlantic-type margin can be subdivided into a lower transgressive phase (yellow seismic interval) and and upper regressive phase (green seismic interval). The boundary between these to stratigraphic phases correspond to a significant downlap surface, often dated as Cenomanian/Turonian.
