Potential Source-Rocks

Regressive Phase of the Continental Encroachment Cycle

The deep offshore of the Amazonas Mouth is another place where there may be a deepwater Neogene generating petroleum sub-system. Indeed, if the transgressive sediments of the margin still exist at this place they will be very deep and probably their organic matter will be over-mature. On the other hand, the Neogene sedimentary column is thick enough so that any dispersive organic matter from deep deposits can reach maturity. Even if the proposed tentative geological interpretation is quite speculate, several oil companies believe that the Neogene generating subsystem can exist. Similarly, the presence of turbidite reservoirs-rocks is likely. A listric faults complex is, perfectly, visible in this autotrace. It is quite easy to explain the distal compressional faulted-anticlines (shortening) as the counterpart of the up-dip extensional structures (lengthening).
