Potential Source-Rocks

Backarc Basins without Oceanization

In this deep offshore, the tectonic inversions show, clearly, the last tectonic context is in compression. The most likely generating petroleum sub-system is associated with the rift-type basins (rifting phase of the backarc basin) developed, behind the volcanic arc, in response to stretching of the lithosphere, which was not enough to create an oceanization, i.e, to breakup the backarc basin with formation of new oceanic crust. The source rocks of these basins generate most of the hydrocarbons produced in SE Asia and, particularly, in Sumatra onshore.
