Potential Source-Rocks

Foredeep Basin

As illustrated on this Canvas autotrace of a seismic line from deep offshore of Caspian Sea, the generating petroleum sub-system is composed by the organic clay of the top of Maykop formation. The top of this geological formation corresponds, partially, to a condensed stratigraphic section, over which a relatively thick shaly Upper Miocene interval (Pontian ?) was deposited, that later worked as a detachment surface. This detachment surface is, clearly, visible on the tentative interpretation. It corresponds to an important tectonic disharmony between the shortened sediments and the underlying undeformed sediments (the observed undulations correspond. mainly. to seismic pitfalls induced by ¨lateral changes of the velocity interval).
