Potential Source-Rocks
Transgressive Phase of the Continental Encroachment Cycle
The interface between the Cretaceous retrogradational transgressive phase and the Cenozoic progradation regressive phase of the post-Pangea continental encroachment cycle, which limits the vertical extension of potential marine source-rocks in this offshore, is, perfectly, visible on this Canvas autotrace, as illustrated on the tentative geological interpretation. An exploration well drilled in this offshore encountered a column of more than 300 meters of sediment with source rocks characteristics. The first transgressive surface seems to flood the topography of a substratum, in which rift-type basins can be found. However, the most like potential source-rocks are the marine source-rocks of the transgressive phase of the margin and not those developed in rift-type basin during the lengthening of the lithosphere of the Gondwana small supercontinent.
