Morondava Geographic Basin


On this highly falsifiable tentative geological interpretation, the Mozambique and Morondava geographic basins are separated by the Davie Ridge, which can be explain by uplift, shortening and volcanic intrusions developed in an overriding plate of a B-type subduction zone. In this hypothesis, the Mozambique geographic basin corresponds to the conventional Mozambique Atlantic-type divergent margin, while the Morondava geographic basin can be considered as a backarc basin developed in association with an extension (differential subsidence) behind the arc represented by the Davie Ridge. Unfortunately, we have not data available to critize, i.e., to test the advanced hypotheses, which seem to match with the global tectonic setting of the area (see Page 65)
